Common Terminology
Terminology Related To Body Movement.
Abduction |
Moving away from the centre of the body. Example : an arm moves away from the body and in an upward direction. |
Adduction |
Moving toward the centre of the body. Example : an arm moves toward the body and in a downward direction. |
Extension |
When one bone moves away from another. The increase in the angle of a joint or the increase in the angle between two bones. |
Flexion |
When one bone approaches another. The decrease in the angle of a joint or the increase in the angle between two bones. |
Rotation |
Twisting a limb in an outwardly or inwardly direction. Rotation of the arm cause the elbow to face outwardly. |
Types of Injury
Sprain |
Stretching or tearing of ligaments. |
Strain |
An excessive stretching of a muscle or an overuse of a body part. |
Body Parts Terminology
Tendon |
A band of dense tissue forming the termination of a muscle and attaching it to a bone |
Ligament |
A band on non elastic connective tissue, connecting bone to bone. |
Foot Related Movements
Dorsi Flexion |
The foot approaches the shin in an upward movement. |
Plantar Flexion |
The foot moves away from the shin in a downward movement. |
Foot Related Injury
Inversion |
The foot rolls out at the ankle so that the sole of the foot faces inward. |
Eversion |
The foot rolls in at the ankle so that the sole of the foot faces away from the other foot. |
